Pricing in detail
A five-seat Starter deployment, the tier ceiling, runs $500 a month. The sixth seat is the cliff: there is no larger self-serve tier, so an eight-person analytics team is an Enterprise conversation whether or not it wants one. Enterprise adds SSO, role-based access control, SCIM provisioning, column-level lineage and multi-project dbt Mesh, and lifts the allowance to 100,000 successful models a month.
Watch the models-built allowance as closely as the seat count. Starter includes 15,000 successful models built per month and Developer just 3,000, so a team running a large graph on a frequent schedule can exhaust the allowance well before it runs out of seats.
Post-merger, dbt Cloud roadmap items target deeper Fivetran integration (lineage across loads and transforms). Buyers signing new Enterprise deals should ask about combined-product pricing.
When to pick dbt Cloud
Pick dbt Cloud when the team wants a hosted IDE, a managed scheduler, and CI/CD for dbt without self-hosting. The IDE remains the easiest way to onboard analysts to dbt.
Avoid dbt Cloud when dbt Core run from CI is sufficient and the cost line is a sensitive number - dbt Core is free under Apache 2.0 and many teams run it well from GitHub Actions or an orchestrator.
